Note from the Artist: Colle di Val d'Elsa is one of a number of fortified hill-top towns in this part of Italy. Very often the old town with its walls and gates occupies the top of the hill, and the modern extension lies on the lower ground. That is the case here, and the old town is relatively small, consisting mostly of one long street containing the cathedral and several palaces. |

Note from the Artist: An old gatepost, could be anywhere, although this was actually near Farleigh Wick, north of Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire. As so often with my subject matter this is a man-made object showing the effects of the passage of time, set in natural surroundings which are, of course, self regenerating, and therefore do not show such effects. |

Note from the Artist: Gates and stiles are often inviting, sometimes on account of intrinsic characteristics, but also because they usually lead on to somewhere else, offering a small sense of discovery and excitement. Here the stile is made of stone, which provided an opportunity to paint old well-used cut masonry. |
